Dermaplaning Explained: Facts, Myths, and Hair Regrowth Science

Dermaplaning uses a sterile 10-gauge scalpel held at a 45-degree angle to scrape off 2–3 weeks of accumulated dead cells (roughly 0.15mm of stratum corneum) plus vellus hair. The treatment takes 30–40 minutes for full face and reveals fresh skin immediately—makeup glides on smoothly, and product absorption increases by 30–40% for the following 7–10 days.

The hair regrowth myth persists despite zero scientific basis. Vellus hair (soft, fine, unpigmented 'peach fuzz') has a diameter of 0.03mm and grows at 0.4mm per day. Shaving or dermaplaning cuts hair at skin level, leaving the follicle and root intact. Hair texture, colour, and thickness are determined by the follicle bulb (deep in the dermis) and your genetics—not by what happens at the surface. Your hair returns in 3–4 weeks looking identical because nothing below the skin has changed.

The 'thicker regrowth' illusion happens because shaved hair has a blunt tip vs the natural tapered end. Running your fingers over 2–3mm of blunt regrowth feels coarser than 8–10mm of tapered hair lying flat. By week four, hair reaches its normal length and the blunt tip is gone—perceived thickness vanishes.

Dermaplaning suits most skin types but has clear contraindications. Active acne (inflamed pustules, cystic breakouts) is a hard stop—the blade spreads bacteria and worsens infection. Rosacea clients can proceed only if currently non-flaring; a flare-up requires rescheduling. Eczema, psoriasis, or open wounds need full healing (7–10 days) before treatment.

Schedule dermaplaning every 4–6 weeks to align with your skin's natural 28-day (age 20s) to 40-day (age 50+) turnover cycle. More frequent treatments risk over-exfoliation and barrier damage; less frequent means you're not optimising the glow window.

Post-treatment care: SPF 50+ is mandatory for 7 days (fresh skin is UV-vulnerable). Avoid retinol, AHAs, and BHAs for 48 hours—you've just removed your protective dead-cell layer, and actives will irritate. Skip makeup for 6–12 hours if possible to let skin settle.

Combine dermaplaning with a hydration or enzyme mask for enhanced results. The hair-free surface allows serums to penetrate 35% deeper, and the immediate smoothness makes it a popular pre-event treatment (book 3–5 days before weddings or photoshoots to allow any minor redness to fade).

Your therapist should use a fresh, sterile blade per client—single-use only. If you see blade reuse or inadequate sanitation, leave. Bloodborne pathogen risk (hepatitis, HIV) exists with any blade service, making sterilisation protocols non-negotiable.
